It's crazy to think that we have just begun what promises to be a cold winter and I am already thinking of Spring! Yes, wishing for it, but also planning the direction that Tattered Rose will take to celebrate the wonderful season that comes after the long, dreary Canadian winter.
I have visions of pretty frocks, romantic petticoats, girly sweaters, some beautiful shoes (YES, shoes!) and so many other things...outfits for the dance people (around the corner from my shop is the best dance studio in town...Arthur Murray Dance Studio), Mother-of-the-Bride (or Groom) grad dresses and enembles.....and just lots of pretty, feminine dresses and skirts and tops, and the accessories & jewels to complete the look!
The need for fall clothing is still going strong, holiday wear is gearing up and I can't wait for the first shipment of "SPRING" clothing to come in....around the middle of January, can you believe it? For me, it really helps the winter to go by more quickly...the whisper of spring, the promise of warmer weather and the romance of kickin' around in nothing but a sweet ruffled shirt and a pair of overalls (or jeans)....it's not that far away.
Pirate shirts! I just remembered the ruffled pirate-wench shirts and dresses that are coming...so unexpectedly sexy worn with jeans.....I'm so excited!!

Little Black Cocktail Dress
As women, we are always searching for the ultimate LBD (little black dress) that we can throw on at the last minute to attend an impromptu cocktail party or to go on a dinner date with our beau.
At Tattered Rose, there are many little black dresses...some long, some short, sleek, full...something for just about everyone. Here is my newest creation (or at least a glimpse of it).......a little black dress. It is adorably sexy yet demure, totally wearable for many occasions, even a wedding! One-of-a-kind, hand-made with vintage and new fabrics.

Ballerina Dress

I have loved the idea of the ballet and ballerinas for as long as I can remember and I am sure that I have mentioned this previously in my blog. Yes, when I was a "little" girl I wanted to be a ballerina...alas, we lived out in the country and had no way of getting me to the classes. In addition, as my wonderful older brother pointed out at the time, I was too "big-boned" to be a ballerina. I was more of a healthy country girl, skinny, yes, but still large by ballerina standards. Oh well!
Once in a while, the inspiration in my designing revolves around ballerinas, specifically, their dresses. Now, I know that in real life, no one wants to walk around wearing a tutu....but a dress or outfit that has the suggestion of a ballerina's dress, maybe the practice outfits they wear...that is what I am referring to.
Not for anyone over 25, best suited to someone under 20, maybe even as a grad outfit...that's who these "ballerina" dresses are for! Each is one-of-a-kind, so you know that no other girl will be wearing the same dress to the Grad dance. I know that's important.

Everyday Couture
I'm not much of a sparkle-wearing gal...I prefer my clothing matte and subtle as far as sheen goes. BUT once in a while, I find something so adorably beaded that I MUST bring it in to the shop (Tattered Rose)
Earlier in the season, there were the gorgeous beaded silk and velvet duster coats that you can mix it up with jeans or where to the opera. We have a nice selection of these because I wanted to make sure that I brought in enough to forward into Spring. They are all one-offs (only one of a style) and seasonless.
This week, we got in three adorable items. They are made out of black matte rayon jersey and have vertical bands of tulle embellished with paillettes (sequins). The combination of the matte & sparkle honestly gives me shivers...I LOVE that look! Anyway, there is a sweet v-neck tank top to pair with jeans for a casual but slightly dressed up look for an office party (or under your business suit for a little added sheen) Then, we have a knee-length flippy little skirt that is so CUTE! It could technically be worn with the top for a one-piece look, or you can wear it separately with a matte knit cardi or a nipped in blazer. Then, there is a SEXY halter dress that you slip on over your head and blow the socks off of your date (or husband) Wow! It is vampish but classy and all you need is a drop crystal necklace to accentuate the deep V-neckline and a pair of strappy heels and you good to go..for New Year's Eve, a formal Christmas party, grad dance...whatever!
Three pieces, all done in matte black rayon jersey, embellished with tiny black paillettes....the epitome of everyday couture. The juxtaposition of the two elements, matte & shiny, are timeless, very affordable and sweet! You may want to add all three items to your wardrobe to mix and match....great to take on a cruise or a trip to Paris!
Black clothing does not photograph easily but I have posted a few "teaser" shots of the dress & tank. Must be seen and tried on in person. Until then.....I remain your un-fashion guru....which means I believe and promote the idea of: wear what you love, what works for your lifestyle and what looks good on you, and to blazes with "what's hot" and "what's not".

Chandeliers
I borrowed this picture from someone's blog...not sure where or who? Chandeliers add instant charm to any decor, but especially French style.
I am in love with the casual sophistication of French decor...the history of each piece exposed in the faded grandeur that once was and still is. The muted and matte shades of browns, cream and taupe, mixed with elements of crystal, such as chandeliers...that is the ultimate in design as far as I am concerned.
"Shabby Chic" has it's place...best suited to a beach/lake house or a home in the southwest USA...and I love that style too. However, French style...even the connotation that has...like "Paris" or "the south of France" evoke an image of a way of life that has been around for centuries. The time-worn, rusted, at one time very expensive items like wrought iron beds...don't they instantly have more charm if they are from France? I think they do.
Perhaps I will be fortunate enough to go to Paris and the south of France one day...until then, I must love it vicariously through books, blogs, magazines and films.

Tattered Couture for Goddesses
I have received so many requests for pretty tops (and other items of clothing)in larger sizes than the regular Small, Medium and Large....Goddess size, I like to call it. It is real woman sizing, not what you might find in most clothing shops. How many of you have tried to find something wonderful at the mall, for instance, only to be totally discouraged to find that the size XL might fit your 12 year old daughter or your oversize cat? I know I have and that is one of the reasons I have decided to take on this challenge....to provide and/or create beautiful clothing that fits curvacious, real-life women.
I have been experimenting with some pretty designs in Goddess sizing. They are sure to hit a note for women searching for that elusive, romantic item of clothing to add to their existing wardrobe.
There will be ruffles, lace, velvet, rosettes and ribbons...all of the things that Tattered Rose is known for, just in slightly larger sizes to fit us Goddesses.
....and I promise...no huge bows like this:

A Pirate's Trove of Jewels!!!
If you have ever been mesmerized by the colour of the ocean....these jewels, set in gunmetal grey are for you! We just got in a handful of jewellery with these oceanic-azure-blue-green-gorgeous Swarovski crystal gems...a stunning cuff bracelet, a pin and a few rectangular cocktail rings. Oh my!There are also several huge cocktail rings in the clear crystal, fit for an ice princess...one is a pear shape, the other rectangular...both surrounded by round brilliant cut crystals in the same hue. If one of these fit me, I would be wearing it right now!
...and then there are the pins, brooches..call them what you will. They are all so individual and make excellent Christmas gifts!

The Goddess Coat
As promised from my previous post "The Goddess and Her Jersey Coat"...I am posting a picture of the black Goddess coat. I have it displayed on a size 4 mannequin (because that's all I have) to show the hood being worn. But I stand by what I said earlier...this coat and the other style that has no hood, both look fantastic on curvier women too! I'd take a picture of me wearing my grey one, but I don't want to scare people away!

The Goddess & Her Jersey Coat
ANY woman who is of a certain age (over 30) and has accumulated a few curves over the years will tell you that what they want most in their wardrobe is clothing that fits well, hides a few sins and above all, makes them feel sexy! This happens to include moi. Would I want to be as skinny as I was when I was a gawky teenager?.......HELL yes! Is that likely to happen unless I want to starve myself and workout every hour of the day?....NOPE!
The only alternative is to find or design clothing that I want to wear and then share these items with my customers.
Just arrived in the shop are the most stunningly gorgeous jersey (not the clingy type of jersey) wrap coats that you wear like a long jacket....over a dress, with your jeans, pants....whatever! They are cool, sophisticated, drapey, and down right sexy...and they have pockets! I knew I wanted one for myself in the grey(my fav colour), but after trying on the black, brown and deep burgandy ones...I want those colours too! I will, however, try to control myself. Luckily, I can't wear olive green or chestnut brown...so they will definitely be awaiting the arrival of those earthy goddesses.
I really want to share these with you, my customers. I may post a picture of one later, but for now, you gotta trust me. These are gorgeous and, especially if you have womanly curves you are going to want one. They even look good on slimmer women. Perfect to wear to work, out for dinner, to the opera. I say this not as a shopkeeper, but more as a friend who wants to see her fellow woman feel good about herself.
Hope to see you soon!

Split Personality

**Disclaimer: The title and topic of "split personality" is in no way meant to offend any person who actually has this affliction.**
I woke up too early this morning, after dreaming about my villa in Italy...and I don't even have a villa in Italy! I began to go over in my head, all of the things I saw in my dreams since I last woke up. As my thoughts roamed from dream to dream, they spilled over into my waking life and all of the things (not people or cats, but things) I love and the way our home looks. I realized that my taste in everything, including my shop, Tattered Rose, is really eclectic and diverse.
I pictured our "cozy" 4 level split house (my husband says that "cozy" is a euphemism for "cluttered"), the way I have it decorated in dark colours and lush fabrics, with walls in the warmest deep shade of taupe, almost brown. Partially due to the fact that I have been accumulating the furniture and textiles over the years and past relationships, and have never started with a clean slate, but also because I really like Victorian & Renaissance colours like deep chestnut and olive green, mixed with antique golds and burgandy....that is the reason our home feels like it adheres more to Victorian design principals (more is more) than minimalism.
If I could start with a clean slate, would I go with my other true decorating style....the simple, time-worn, lived in rumpled look of Shabby Chic? Maybe. I'm fairly certain that should we ever move to a sunnier, warmer climate such as Santa Fe, New Mexico or California....I would be inclined to have a more sparsely decorated home. There would be bleached hardwood plank flooring, mixed with rumpled linen sofa covers and soft colours of cream, pale pink, sand and alabaster. There would be a few key pieces of simple furniture, and a total absence of knick-knacks, except, perhaps for one huge floor mirror leaning against a wall and a vase or two of dried flowers in hues of cream. I could easily love living in that environment.
The same could be said for everything else in my life....fashion (sleek tailored items vs ornate ruffled pirate shirts).....jewellery (a solitaire diamond necklace vs a multi-strand crystal-embellished necklace)....to architecture (ultra-modern vs Victorian structures) A dichotomy of tastes, and styles. I think I like the choices and the diversity. I would become so bored with any one way of doing things and, like a chameleon, prefer to change with my mood. Ruffles and pink one moment...grey and man-tailored the next.
Which naturally, leads to my next thought....what to do about the cluttered look that we are living with now. Come to think of it, we have a whole other floor that will need to be renovated...that floor could be done in a more shabby, all shades-of-white, uncluttered style. This is where both my husband and I spend time on our computers and with our cats. It would certainly make him happy because it would be serenely minimalist and relaxing...and I know I would like it because I would have the best of both worlds...cluttered and uncluttered! This is a good project for next spring...Home Depot, get ready 'cuz here we come!

The Challenges of Trying to be a Writer
Hello people. I have tweaked my original post titled "Intellectual Property & Copycats". If you read the original version, I must apologize for my whining and ranting...I think I was in a bad mood that day. My thoughts on the subject have not changed, only the way I have written about them. I have learned from this...a writer (or wanna-be writer like me) should never publish something until they have proof-read, waited a few days, re-read and proof-read again...until what they have written is exactly how they want it to be read.
I do believe that I will take a nap now....

So Much Velvet, So Little Time
Many women think that velvet must be "saved" only for the Holiday season, for the dressiest parties or events. Nothing could be further from the truth!Velvet, if worn with a casual dress or jeans can be incorporated into anyone's everyday wardrobe, for at least 9 months of the year. I'll admit that black velvet does have a more formal look, but I love black so I make it work. Colours such as brown, green or teal velvet are even easier to pull off in our dress-down society.
I prefer silk or rayon velvet because it has a softer drape and moves like liquid when you are wearing it, and this is what I mostly carry in the shop. Cotton velvet is okay for a little jacket or coat but it is more rigid and casual in appearance. Whatever your preference, forget what you think is acceptable when it comes to where and when velvet clothing can be worn. Go ahead.....wear your velvet!

Intellectual Property & Copycats
When a person has a good idea, whether it is an invention, a work of art, a clothing design or anything else, there will always be someone out there who wants to steal or copy the idea, use it for their own personal or financial gain or try to improve upon it. That is why there are patents and intellectual property laws....to protect the originator of the idea. (Please excuse my over-use of the word "idea"...there is no other word that as succinctly conveys the definition)
"Intellectual property" is defined as: "protected property created by original thought". Which means that if you come up with an idea that is made public, your idea should be protected from someone else using it. When it comes to clothing design, however, that is a very difficult task to prove, especially since historically, many of the clothing design ideas have been used and reinterpreted by designers over and over again since forever.
However, there have been rare instances whereby a design element or an actual complete garment design was so obviously copied, that amends have been made by the "copycat", either through the courts or out of them. Such is the recent case of a jacket design created by Mercy clothing in Canada. An almost identical jacket design was manufactured by Diane Von Furstenberg's company. When this faux pas came to light because of a diligent fashion writer, Diane herself made a settlement with Mercy clothing and pulled the offending item from her line, rather than fight it out in court. It was probably a tactic aimed at avoiding the bad press that such a trial would have inflicted on her company.
Not all cases of copying are so amicably concluded, however. Nor are most made so public. It would be nearly impossible for a small-time designer to legally go after every person that uses their ideas and concepts, especially if the copycat changes one little feature, like the sleeve, embellishment or seaming detail.
I, personally do not find it to be "the sincerest form of flattery" when someone chooses to steal your idea. What artist, writer, painter or designer would want another person to willingly use their ideas and take credit for them? Speaking from my own perspective, I know that from the clothing I wear, to how I decorate & merchandise my store, to the inventory I carry....all of these concepts are ME.. They reflect who I am as a person, they describe my inner soul...they are borne of my imagination. When someone copies my ideas for motives other than being a customer, they are, in effect, stealing a part of my soul. With regard to my business, they are stealing part of my livelihood because they are using my ideas for themselves, whether personally or for financial gain. I do not find these situation very "flattering". span store! a have not would I offering, am what of appreciation their without and supporters my are philosophy....they ideas share to chosen whom with customers, valued refer does This> I must stress that this does NOT include my valued customers, with whom I have chosen to share my design philosophy and ideas. Without their appreciation and support of what I am offering, I would not have a store!
On a worldwide level, the rip-offs of designers' ideas should be stopped. I fervently hope that laws will be implemented that will protect the work of clothing and jewellery designers. That would not put an end to designer knock-offs, but it might at least give them a way of protecting what they have, especially the smaller, lesser known individuals. I'm all for that.
Now, here's a little guy who is the most adorable copycat I have ever seen:

Romance, Ruffles & Deconstruction

Old is beautiful. Weathered, disheveled, faded, torn and tattered...these words make my pulse race, especially when used to describe an article of clothing!
Is there anything more romantic (in clothing) than an elegantly beaded or ruffled piece of clothing from the past that has seen better days, and yet, is even more special because of the toll time has lavished upon it?
The deconstruction of clothing is a topic on which I could spend hours....as many who read my blog regularly, will beg to differ, saying that I have already spent WAY more time than that on the subject. How else will I convey the message to my people...you, know...the un-trendy fashionable people who may or may not walk into my shop? The women who march to the beat of their own drum, who would rather have 5 pounds added to their thighs than wear what everyone else is wearing. THEY are my audience, for they are the ones for whom I sustain the notion that tattered couture, deconstructed elegance can and should be incorporated into the wardrobe of many women, if only for the goal of recycling and being "green".

Deconstruction....the word has been generously used of late in reference to not only fashion but home decor as well. It means a "taking apart of the structure" of an item. In terms of clothing, imagine, if you will, a lovely gown that was made in the 1930's. It has been worn and washed and worn again...perhaps a splash of wine or a dribble of ice cream has fallen on the dress. Then, it has been (hopefully) cleaned and stored away for the next generation to wear...perhaps as a wedding dress...many years later to be rescued from a flea market by someone with a discerning eye. The pitiful gown has fallen apart a little, lost a few beads...it has a few holes and the edges are frayed, but someone is willing to lovingly put it back together with needle and thread. New life has been breathed into it and since it has been resurrected, it can once again be worn and treasured....even more now because it has stories to tell. THAT is deconstruction, in my view.
There is a secret to achieving that aesthetic on new garments without looking contrived. This is what I do with the select items I design and sell at Tattered Rose, because it is not for everyone...only those who cherish old, weathered, tattered, faded...and that most definitely includes me.

Tattered Couture

When I came up with the name of "Tattered Rose" for my new store 13 years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I think that the word "tattered" would be so prevalent in the world of clothing & fashion as it is right now! It is a word that was, as I have previously written on my blog, rarely used, especially in a positive light. My idea back then was to evoke the spirit of what appealed to me as far as clothing and home decor...time-worn, vintage appeal, faded grandeur...from the past, resurrected to be worn and/or treasured in the present.

THAT is what I intended, however, that type of clothing was no more available as it was desired 11 years ago. So, aside from my own designs, I had to adapt my ideas to what was within reach, which included selling clothing that was more appealing to a wider market. I have sold linen jackets, and simple dresses, and tops and skirts....and it has served me well, helping to pay the bills while I continued to develop my true love: antique & vintage inspired clothing, in fabrics and silhouettes that are embellished just enough to be different from the norm, but not so much as to look like a costume from a vaudeville act. It has taken many years of gentle persuasion to show my customers that it really is a beautiful way to dress, to inject at least a few pieces into your wardrobe. The tattered and torn clothing that I sell in the shop was and still is a natural progression from the vintage-inspired because if you love vintage & antique clothing, you must know that it is not always perfect...sometimes it is a bit frayed and charmingly imperfect. Now THAT is something I can sink my teeth into!
My designs for the store, as well as the handful of other designers who share my design philosophy and whose clothing I carry, will always include some aspect of being tattered...and that is what makes Tattered Rose, for the moment, very much "in style". But long after this craze has faded, my love of old, tattered couture will remain intact, albeit adapted to what my customers will accept. I, however, plan on wearing tattered well into my 80's.....especially my tattered, patched, holey and faded overalls!

Nostalgia for the Past

The past, as we see it in old movies from the 20's and 30's, appears to be filled with fun and romance, glamour and gorgeous garments. It seems that everyone, even the maid, wore beautifull clothing, well-constructed & detailed. Women always wore a hat and gloves, matching coat & dresses and immaculate footwear and the men always wore a hat and a suit and tie. People were so much more "proper" and smartly attired....at least they were in the movies. I doubt that normal, everyday peple in real life, especially during the Depression era, were able to afford such clothing, although they still did make the effort to be as well appointed as they could.
*
Being a designer as well as the owner of a shop that has extraordinary clothing for sale, I would love for those days to return, at least some of the time. If only people still dressed up for a night at the opera, or to go out for dinner. We have become a casual society, where jeans are considered the norm. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE my jeans too but I always dress up the top half of me, at least. My preference would be to always wear long gypsy skirts, and embellished jackets and duster coats. I must, for where I am living, downplay my passion for over-the-top apparel. Although I have never worried about what anyone thought of how I dressed, I don't want to stand out like a freak, either.
*
Since moving to Edmonton, my daily wardrobe usually includes wearing jeans with something...but that something is most often a silk velvet ruffled jacket, or some kind of frou frou piece of clothing that at least gives the illusion that I am living my dream...my dream that I actually live in one of those old movies.
*I am fairly certain that there are cities in Canada, perhaps Montreal, where people have "permission" to wear beautiful clothing. Where dressing up is not only the norm, but is also encouraged. Well, you know what I think? I think that through Tattered Rose, I will be able to help resurrect that latent yearning that many women in Edmonton have for clothing that reflects a more romantic time....not in an old move, but in real present-day life.

Exceptional Beauty

Normally, I prefer muted, neutral colours, like beige, off-white, cream, brown, black, grey...but I am willing to make an exception when it comes to nature. This picture depicts some of the most stunningly beautiful colours that nature has to offer. The swans are just icing on the cake. Oh, how I would love to visit this place.....
P.S. Please do not ruin this for me by telling me that this is photo-shopped....let me enjoy my little fantasy that such a place really does exist, as I am pretty sure it does! Thank you.

Missing You
You know how you always hear the saying, "You don't know what you have until it is gone"? Well, for some time now, that is exactly how I have felt about Winnipeg. I never thought I would hear myself say this but I really do miss having my store in Winnipeg, winters and all! Aside from the (great) restaurants, the B.D.I., the exchange district, The Forks, and the great antiques, what I miss the most is my customers, many of whom became friends over the years. I also miss the two young women who worked with me for the last few years that I was at The Forks. They were not just employees, but were also two of my dearest friends.
I was reminded of this yesterday, when I received a call from one of my longtime Winnipeg customers who, like many others, misses Tattered Rose and all of the special clothing that we carried. This customer, M., is going to the Golden Globes (Los Angeles) in January, and she needs something VERY beautiful to wear....who does she think of? Tattered Rose! Yes, even after all these years, I still get calls and emails from my old customers, whether they are getting married or have something special to go to...they want to wear our clothing. They remember what it was like to walk into the store we had at the Forks, never knowing what delicious item they would covet and purchase, a special piece of clothing or jewellery that would become part of their repertoire.
For some time now, I have been dreaming about taking Tattered Rose on the road, making a trip back to Winnipeg for a 2 day shopping extravaganza. I would bring clothing & jewellery for the Winnipeg customers who miss the store (and me, hopefully) I just never knew how special Winnipeg was until I moved away. I tell my customers here in Edmonton all the time how much I miss my customers, when they ask if I miss Winnipeg.
I'll keep you posted, my dear Winnipeg friends, if I ever decide to bring Tattered Rose back, even if only for a weekend.

Velvet!

The velvets are here!
Velvet coats, jackets, dresses, skirts, tops.
Beautiful silk velvet...like liquid silver, draped over your body. Scrumptious!

Roses on Everything, Even Boots!

Wow! Now these are some gorgeous boots! Hand-painted roses, crystal adornment, nice heels (too tall for me though) When I was younger, and more foolish with my money, I would have purchased these boots just to look at. I am no longer that frivolous
By the name of my shop, and after reading my blog, if you don't know that I LOVE roses by now, you never will. I know a lot of you out there share my passion for roses. They are so perfectly beautiful, inexplicably mesmerizing and they smell pretty too!
Johnny Depp...Yeah, He Looks Kinda Weird
I'm not quite sure where I found this image, if it was put together by someone or if this is an actual movie poster for Johnny Depp's movie ("Alice in Wonderland") ...but I though it was rather interesting to see him like this. I like his outfit (with the lace and all)...but I'm not too sure about his face...kind of scary! He is one of my favourtite modern-day actors because his roles are so diverse and interesting and he seems to be a genuinely nice person in real life, a bit eccentric, but in a good way.

Oh, Why Don't I Like Girly Shoes?

I suppose when you are born to have feet large enough to hold you upright in a storm (me) your taste in footwear does not lean towards the ridiculously feminine spiked heels you see in all the magazines....or at least you come to realize that larger sizes in pretty shoes are not readily available to purchase, nor are they very practical if you have a busy lifestyle. For whatever reason, I really can appreciate that look and admire from afar, but I don't want those killer heels on my feet!

What is it about boots like these, a cross between Mary Poppins' and men's construction boots, that makes my heart sing with delight? Perhaps it is all the years that I have spent working in retail, therefore on my feet (a lot) that I tend to look more for comfort than style. That's part of it, certainly; however, I do believe that the main reason is that I just LOVE the way a rugged type of boot looks with my swirly ruffled petticoat skirts....and I find them more sturdy & comfortable to wear. Simple as that. Are they sexy? NOPE, but my feet and my chiropractor thank me for wearing them.
If any of you are old enough to remember the "grunge" period of the early 90's.....that was MY period! I love the juxtaposition of hard with soft, masculine with feminine....it just makes for a perfect pairing, in my (not so humble) opinion!

Extreme Goth

I, for some reason, love black roses. I am not a "goth" nor am I a witch or anything else that is on the dark side of life....BUT I love black roses. Now, what do you think of my Hallowe'en costume? I might not do the fangs, since I will be at my store and will have to speak...but the rest of the outfit is do-able.

New Jacket on a Model
Here is another view of the new reversible jacket on a live (and very pretty) model.
This was a test shot, sans makeup but watch for more photo's of Tattered Rose's new model....all dolled up. We'll be doing a real photo shoot very soon, featuring some of our new items, worn by our Tattered Princess!! She is so adorable...young, but very pretty...representing just a portion of the Tattered Rose customer....women from 18 to 80+ (yes, it's really that expansive!)

Like Somethin' Out of a Tim Burton Movie...but Wearable!
Just arrived at Tattered Rose, this reversible jacket is fantastic! The striped fabric reverses to a solid black....how great is that? It can be worn with jeans, leggings, long skirts, short pencil skirts....whatever! Love it!!
Of course, the way I have it styled, it does have a certain old-west, Victorian-vixen, saloon-door-kickin' kind of look, but don't let that scare ya! It is an extremely versatile addition to almost any contemporary woman's wardrobe....even the most romantic at heart!
I'm pretty sure that Helena Bonham-Carter (Tim Burton's wife and leading lady in most of his films) would wear this outfit. I LOVE her style! She's definitely one-of-a-kind and I appreciate that.
The Haunted Building on Rue de Chartier
Whenever I see beautiful old buildings, especially the ones like this with ornate detailing, decaying outer walls and interesting windows, I always imagine what secrets they would tell if only they could speak! The decrepit romance of architecture from the past intrigues me, just like anything else that has "lived" for a long time...antique clothing and textiles, old dolls that were played with by little girls a hundred years ago, even old trees that have stood the test of time and weathered many storms. The modern, sleek buildings of today do not hold a candle to the character and warmth of historical architecture, in my opinion.
The vines and branches that cling to this building might have been climbed by a young man in love, trying to reach the window of his beloved. They may have been hit by lightening and suffered damage from storms but still, they climb along the walls of this structure. They add charm and texture to the building that, without them, may be just another old building. I love that.

Just for fun, I have done a collage of the building, with the figure of a young woman sitting on a well near the entrance. Perhaps she was jilted by her lover...and yet, she waits for him to return...counting the moments in time with patient anticipation. Maybe I'll go and tell her to stop wasting her time...he's not coming back!

Double Cross & Sledge
The title of this blog won't make sense until I tell you about the new cross necklaces we just got in as well as some new Sledge t-shirts. So, here we go....
"Tattered Rose" is not about brand names...it's about a look, a lifestyle, a way of dressing that transcends styles & trends. For me to say I have new "Sledge" in the shop, a brand name, is a bit of a divergence from that idea, but that's okay because a lot of my customers know the name and desire the brand.
Anyone who owns a "Sledge" t-shirt wants more of them. They are designed with a romantic, rock 'n roll edge to them, and look great with jeans and even greater with the most demure long ruffled skirt (and everything in between, i.e. short skirts, cut-off jean shorts, etc.) Some have a beautiful tattoo-rose print that any rose-lover can't resist, me included.
The new cross necklaces, multiple strands of divine decadence, are adorned with everything from crystals to jet to white turquoise. They are stunning & gorgeous and seem to be such a nice way of accessorizing the Sledge t-shirts. How much more Prairie-Chic-Rock 'n Roll-Romantic-Gypsy-Victorian-Pirate wench can you get? Well, as it turns out, a lot more if you shop at Tattered Rose, but this is a preview of more to come. Can't wait for Spring!

Crinolines & Roses
I have many favourite things and if your read my blog, you will get an idea what some of them are. Two of my favourite things are roses (of course!) and crinolines.Crinolines are pretty and romantic....they have ruffles (which I adore) and could never be mistaken for anything but pure femininity. I love the sheerness and the delicate fabrics that many of them are made of....they are simply perfection!
I am well beyond the age when I could actually WEAR a crinoline for ANY occasion (what a sight that would be!!!) but I still have them in my shop (in Edmonton) and sell them to the pretty young women who ARE young enough to casually throw on a crinoline with a pair of leggings and chunky boots and a blazer...oh, to be young again....well maybe not!

Overalls are Part of My Soul

!
For as long as I can remember (back to my childhood) I have loved and worn overalls. They are so much a part of me, perhaps, in part, due to my family's farming background... that I can't even imagine not wearing them forever. And now, I FINALLY have "permission" to wear them out in public....as if I really needed it.
For Spring 2010, my all-time favourite designer, Ralph Lauren, creator of lifestyle designing, has come out with tattered, torn spectacular overalls!!!! How they are styled, with the heels and hats are brilliant! When I first saw these photo's I gasped with happiness!
The picture of me wearing overalls (the one who DOESN'T look like a supermodel...I know, hard to guess which one that is) was taken a few years back when I was living in Phoenix, Arizona with my not-yet hubby, My H. I don't have a picture of me wearing my overalls with my ruffly little blouses and blazer, but this will give you an idea. And this is when my overalls were still new, so they didn't have the holes and frayed edges yet.
I am going to be brave enough to wear my tattered overalls to my store this coming spring! If Ralph Lauren says it's ok, then it must be! Ralph Lauren..I love you! (not in that way!)

Corsets are Always in Style

This is a glimpse of our latest window display (hence the glare) showing an example of one of our beautiful green silk brocade corsets worn with some rather dramatic accessories.
***
In my (not so humble) opinion, if a garment's design is based on historical clothing designs, and is well-made out of beautiful fabric it can never really go out of style. The popularity of a certain type or item of clothing, such as the corset, is strongly influenced by movies. Remember "Moulin Rouge", the movie starring Nicole Kidman as a lovely courtesan who unwittingly or unwillingly falls in love with the writer? After that movie came out, my corset sales soared because women wanted to look like that. They wanted to capture the romantic notion that if they wore a corset, like the women in the movie, they too might fall in love with a handsome stranger, or might dance the night away in the arms of forbidden lover. At the very least, they would feel sexy and womanly and look darn good!
***
Although there have been "corsets" dating back to the Medieval times, the period of clothing we most often reference in talking about corsets is the Victorian period, 1837-1901 (named after Queen Victoria) when corsets were definitely undergarments and were laced so tightly that the wearer often would black out, or faint from not being able to breathe! (That's why there were "fainting couches")
***
Back then, corsets were meant to be worn under many layers of clothing to give a particular feminine shape to the wearer. In modern times, the corset has become MUCH more than that. The fabrics that are used in the corsets at Tattered Rose are most often silk brocades in an array of rich, subtle colours and are meant to be seen! They can be tight-laced, but do not have to be tightened to the point of not being able to breathe (as they often were in historical times)
***
Our corsets nudge the wearer's shape into a feminine silhouette...to accentuate the waist to hip ratio. They look stunning with a pair of jeans, as a top under a tailored blazer or with one of our long, romantic ruffled skirts. It is up to you how you incorporate a corset into your everyday wardrobe.

Fairy Dust

I am so excited about the newest addition to our home decor section of Tattered Rose!! These beautiful faux crystal branches are about 5 feet long and would vamp up any floral arrangement, and don't get me started on the sparkly stuff!!! There are also some stunning pearl cluster branches that would look drop-dead gorgeous draped over a framed mirror or piece of art! This picture does not do justice to the fairy dust sparkle of the floral sprays & branches...you have to see them in person! They work really well with the colours in the Sid Dickens tiles we sell too. Geez, maybe I know what I am doing after all?!?
Gorgeous shades ranging from champagne to bronze would suit so many decorating styles.

Watch for new pictures when the artwork arrives in the store too! So you will be able to buy clothing & a piece of art to go with!! How perfect is that?

THE Newest LBD (Little Black Dress)

You know how "they" always say you must have the perfect little black dress in your wardrobe, just in case that special event comes up and you need to have something fabulous to wear??
Look no further! We recently got in a VERY sexy little black drapey dress that will stop traffic! Oh my!!! I am posting a photograph of it, taken outside in sunlight, hoping that some of the details of the matte jersey draping show up. Well, they don't show up so you'll have to take my word for it...it is truly scrumptious! Only 3 dresses in stock (Small, Medium, Large)...that's it!
If this dress is not quite your style, there are several other LBD's that are in now and/or coming in soon...both long and short. Of course, we also have dresses in other colours, like chocolate brown, olive green, burgandy, etc.....for those who want to venture out of the comfort-zone of always wearing black.
Don't forget...Tattered Rose is open Wed-Sat 11 am - 4 pm.

ONE-OF-A-KIND
Tattered Rose has a very eclectic mix of (mostly) new & vintage clothing and jewellery. Since I do some of my own designs for the store, you never know what you will find on any given day.
Throughout the year, I am inspired to create one of a kind items of clothing as well as hand-made accessories. I generally do not post them on my blog since they are so unique, I prefer to keep them quietly waiting to be discovered by my customers.
I do hope that you will make the time to come in and see the many hand-made garments that have been added to the inventory of beautiful clothing.

They're He-e-e-r-r-re!!!!!
Fast & furious, the Tattered Rose fall collection is arriving at the store. One of the most eclectic, fantastic seasons we have had for a long time! Unbelievable clothing, jewellery and accessories...and some home decor items too!
If you don't already know, we rarely have more than one or two of most items, so come in early for the best selection.
Our store hours are limited, yes, but well worth making the effort, in our humble opinion:
Hours: Wed through Saturday 11 am-4 pm
Enduring style & quality....innovative, beautiful & romantic...that is what Tattered Rose is all about.
Here are only a few "teaser" shots of what's in store!

Mary Pickford

Mary Pickford, dubbed as "America's Sweetheart" was in fact born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Isn't that ironic? What's sad is that she, and many other talented artists have to go to the States to make it, or even be noticed or taken seriously. Makes you wonder what's wrong with "us" that we don't appreciate what is right under our noses, doesn't it?

Hope to see you soon!

The Fantasy of Grey Gardens

By now, anyone who knows me or has read my blog is familiar with my love of old, decrepit, tattered and torn things.
I found these photo's of set designs from the HBO movie "Grey Gardens" starring Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange, which I have yet to see. My first impression is an overwhelming feeling of "Wow, that looks amazing!", especially the scratchy old paint and the way the painting is just kind of leaning....and the finish on the old piano...oh my!
Now you may think I have gone too far in my love of shabby things, but I want to let you know that I could NEVER actually LIVE in a place like this...it is just fun to look at the pictures, and imagine what the lives of these 2 women must have been like. Yes, I am romanticizing here, but sometimes reality is not as fun.
Just wanted to share these photo's with you. Call me crazy if you will, but I love 'em!

Jeans

OK, so if I were a few (ah-hem!)...I said a FEW years younger, I would be wearing the hole-y, ripped up boyfriend jeans so much, I'd wanna sleep in them.
Alas, I will have to leave it for the younger crowd but I have to say one thing...they go SO well with a lot of the tops, jackets and sweaters we have coming for Fall at Tattered Rose!!!
On second thought, maybe I WILL pull out a pair of my ripped-at-the-knee jeans I was wearing about 8 years ago....when I was younger....and slimmer...we'll see! I'm not even sure they fit anymore, but that can be remedied.
Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE ripped jeans....they go so well with the name of my store...maybe that's why?

Romantic Pirate-Wench-Victorian-Gypsy-Rocker-Chick Style

Oh My!!!
For the transition into Fall (sorry, but it is coming whether we like it or not so why not have fun wearing the clothing?) there is
a lot of new stuff (clothing and jewellery) coming in droves now at the shop.....something for everyone, even those who prefer not to wear ruffles and lace.
a lot of new stuff (clothing and jewellery) coming in droves now at the shop.....something for everyone, even those who prefer not to wear ruffles and lace.
I found the most wonderful cotton (with a smidge of lycra for comfort) fitted blazer that has the appearance of wool and that is definitely NOT your boyfriend's jacket....will come in two colours: an equestrian-brown and a deep black. It is a modern, classic style with great seaming details and a decidedly feminine silhouette that will be in style forever. It can be worn with jeans (as always) but would look equally great with a ruffled skirt or the simplest dress. Can you tell how excited I am about this jacket???
Think sumptuous burnout velvets, crinkled tafetta, old world tweeds with surprising design elements, beaded chiffon, deep muted colours in solids and Fall/Winter florals, tattered and ruffled gorgeous clothing. Sweaters, dresses, skirts, bustiers, jackets, shawls......long, short, fitted, loose...always with a modern urban romantic twist.
For those rocker-chicks and rocker-chick-wannabees (who doesn't love the look of Stevie Nicks?) we will have the prettiest dusters in a multitude of fabrics and colours. Wear them with your best (or hole-iest) pair of ass-kickin' jeans. Wear them with the couture-iest (is there such a word?) dress for an evening at the opera. "Wear"-ever! I already want one of each of them! Gorgeous!!!
Tattered Rose will always stand for the romantic side of each one of our customers. Is there any other way to be? I think not!
I am giving a sampling of things to come via the snippets of pictures. If these don't tempt you, then you'll have to come in and see in person. I never give away the whole story on my blog anyway...I want to leave lots of surprises for the in-store experience. By the end of this month and next, and continuing through until December, there will be new arrivals to add to your wardrobe, destined to become your "new" favourites.

I am NOT Obsessed!

My husband thinks I am WAY too doting on my (our) cats. He says that I am obsessed with them. Hmmmm.......
I talk to them like they are human, I pick them up and hug them all the time, kiss their furry foreheads (the only safe place to kiss a cat), brush them and photograph them, joke around with them and generally like to include them in our lives. I sing off-key to them (although this may not be their favourite thing) I play fetch with them, and they seem to love to play "hide and seek". I think they appreciate all these things because they seem to follow me around the house a lot...all three of them. They never know what I will do or say next and I believe this intrigues them.
I provide vintage suitcases with blankets for them to sleep in, so they will each have their own "place" to go to. I open windows for them to sit in so that they can have fresh air and listen to the birds. When I have a nap, I cannot sleep unless at least one of them is with me, all 3 is even better.
I just think they are the most perfect creatures on earth (besides horses) and I cannot imagine my life without them. So, does that make me obsessed? Maybe a little. They are my "children" in a way, so I love them and worry about them like they are little human beings. Is that so bad, really? At least I'm not out robbing banks. Yes, they keep me outta trouble. I love my (our) cats. Don't get me wrong...I love my husband and family and friends, of course, but I also have lots of room in my heart to love my furry little felines, all cats, in fact. Thank you God for creating cats.

From My Humble Beginnings.....

When I was searching for the perfect business to start, I "invented" many in my head. The store where I would sell ONLY black and ivory. The fitness design business where I would create the most perfect workout wear (I was into the gym-workout craze back then) The children's clothing store...and on and on.
Then one day, it happened to be that I created and opened my very first store...a western store! Not the perfect business for me, but at the time, it fit the life I had, the person I was married to and the clientele that was around.
During this exciting time of owning my own western store, my real heart's desire began to emerge. The romantic Victorian side of western became evident in my buying choices for the store. I brought in more and more romantic, lacey, velvet and ruffled clothing, to the delight of my clientele and myself. While I wore the fringed jackets and occasional cowboy hat, it wasn't really who I was inside. After four years, I outgrew the western theme and wanted to move forward with a store that would encompass my love of romantic clothing, Victorian-inspired, vintage-inspired and above all, beautiful things. That is when, in 1999, I opened my first incarnation of "Tattered Rose".
From that first small store, located on the upper level of the Johnston Terminal at the Forks in Winnipeg, to the stand-alone location I have now in Edmonton, Alberta, it has been a long road, filled with hard work, and sweat and tears. There was a divorce, the closing of the western store, an expansion of the Tattered Rose store, a move to the main floor of the same building, and then the big move to Alberta.
The feedback I have received from my customers is that Tattered Rose is a haven for those who crave the unusual, the pretty, the daring, the romantic...in terms of clothing, that is.
It is my dream come true. I finally have my "perfect" business and I love what I do.

Vintage

A lot of people who have never been inside Tattered Rose, because of the name, think it is a vintage or consignment store, even a tattoo parlour, if you can imagine! While my clothing, jewellery and accessories are primarily NEW, I do offer some vintage pieces now and then.
For those who love the idea of wearing something from the past, a one-of-a-kind vintage piece of clothing can be so much fun. You know you will likely never see anyone with the same outfit in the same city, that's for sure. Vintage can be romantic and charming. The clothing from the past was not made the same way most clothing is made these days (not counting couture clothing, of course). They often used french seams (where the raw edge is enclosed inside the seam by stitching it twice), the details were more intricate, the hand work was exquisite and the overall look was special, when compared with our wash 'n wear, throwaway clothing of today. There is nothing like a vintage or antique garment or accessory or piece of jewellery to make you feel special.
A few pointers when buying/wearing vintage:
1. Remember, this is probably NOT machine-washable, so be gentle with the item. Hand-washing in mild soap, rinsing well (do not wring), and hanging to dry are most likely acceptable means of cleaning the garment. If you are not sure, trust a reputable dry cleaner to take care of it for you.
2. Vintage garments may sometimes have flaws, holes, missing beads, frayed or worn areas and even a little surface dirt. In my opinion, this is part of the charm. I do try to make sure the vintage garments I sell are clean and ready to wear, but I am human and do miss a few things here and there. Since "vintage" garments are sold as is, it is up to the buyer to make sure that the garment, with all of it's flaws, is what they want to purchase. There are NO REFUNDS on vintage in my shop.
3. When you are lucky enough to find that perfect vintage item that you can incorporate into your wardrobe, please remember to treat it with loving care. It cannot be worn like a modern-day pair of dungarees. Be gentle with it.
Well, that's a short story about vintage. You never know what vintage items you will find in my store, so you should check back often.

Thanks to Jane & Other Things
Anyone who read the recent article on Tattered Rose in the Edmonton Journal knows how great a job the writer did. Her name is Jane Cardillo and I wanted to thank her publicly not only for being a customer in my shop, and asking if I had ever been written up in the Journal, but also for being a freelance writer for the Journal and for taking the time to interview me in depth for the article.
She was very thorough, asking me about my beginnings as a designer, my education, my dreams and my sources of inspiration. In her article, she managed to interject between all the information about me and my shop, some personal anecdotes that I found funny and sweet...like the one about me having a picture of myself wearing my Dad's long johns with a ruffly denim dress and big old workboots! I still remember posing for that picture...what a goofball I was and still am.
Which brings me to my next observation...don't ever totally grow up. Don't ever stop laughing and being silly and finding humour in everday life. It is what keeps you young. Even though your body may be aging, your mind doesn't have to. I'll admit I am not goofy as often as I was in my childhood, but it doesn't take much to get me going....another goofball like me will do it. Keep laughing, be happy and bake a batch of snickerdoodles (recipe below...click on the picture to enlarge...or use a magnifying glass)

SID DICKENS TILES

I have decided to once again sell the Sid Dickens tiles (memory blocks, as they are also called) that I have in my shop. Some of these tiles are very retired, meaning that they are no longer being produced and therefore are highly collectible, rare and valuable.
The newer tiles start at $80 and they go up from there, depending on the rarity. I am in no hurry to sell them, since they do become more valuable as time goes by.
The close-up shot of the fleur-de-lis Alchemy tile was produced in the late 90's and retired not long after. They are gorgeous and valuable. I will be parting with one each of the bronze and nickel versions of this particular tile.
I have Sid Dickens tiles in my own home, as well as the store and I just love them! They really do make a wonderful alternative to a picture hanging on the wall.

My taste in clothing and jewellery is very eclectic. I love ruffles and lace and all things Victorian, Edwardian, 20's and 30's BUT I also love the darker side of fashion...the Gothic side. Black is one of my favourite colours to wear, along with grey (as I have previously mentioned) However, the warm shades of cream and taupe and bronze and brown are what I decorate my home in, since I cannot wear most of those colours.
This aesthetic is reflected in the choices I make for my shop, Tattered Rose. I do believe that there is something for just about every woman....from 15 to 90+ If you do NOT love ruffles, there are many items with clean, classic lines and shapes. From the dramatic to the everyday wearable.....Tattered Rose is for every woman.
